We are in a room with no light except a small lamp on the table. I am sitting in a chair with bands around my wrists. He says they’re for my safety.

“Now, this will test your ability to detect energy. It might take you through some-” he pauses. “Traumatic moments. Try to remain calm. You cannot touch or be touched. I will be here the whole time, and Arthur is right across the hall.”

“When does it start?” I ask, shifting uneasily.

“It will be turned on in, three, two-” I don’t hear one; it’s like when I was sucked onto the grass. I am in a different place, no longer in the dark room with Aeacus. There is a large metal fence to my right, and I am standing on a gravel road. I can feel it beneath my bare feet. I can hear the wind and feel it whipping at me through the fence. The clouds are making the scene dark and threatening. I see a group huddled around someone. They are shouting, but my ears can’t detect words. I walk over to the group.

“I’m only here to help!” A voice I immediately recognize speaks.

“Emily?!” I race towards them. What is happening? Why is she in this?

The scene gets violent just as I reach them. Emily wails at them to stop. I inspect the people hurting her. Ghosts. I yell at them to stop, but I’m invisible. In the end, I kneel next to Emily as she dies. Her last breath were words of peace. “I’m sorry,” she apologizes before dying. I cry out, trying to grasp at her, hoping she can feel my comforting touch as she passes. I feel so much grief, just as I had when they told us she was most likely dead.

“Please, forgive me,” I mumble. I let my head fall, and wish it wasn’t real. That it hadn’t actually happened.

“Tia?” her voice croaks.

“Emily!” I look up, and her eyes meet mine. She smiles and grips my hand. I watch as that smile softens and her eyes remain open. There is nothing more I can do. My tears are numberless. My grief puzzles me. I know she’s dead, and I know where she’s been. These camps were dangerous.

Watching her, hoping the image will float away, I see something else. There is a feeling and brightness emanating from her. It leaves her. What is that? I question, and words come into my mind. “Her soul.” I watch as it flies away and then it gets stuck, somehow. Like it can’t go any further into the sky. I watch it burst as if it’s caught fire and turn into Emily’s ghost. That’s when the image breaks, and I come back to reality.

“Welcome back, Tia.” Aeacus’ voice slurs in my head. I feel tears streaming down my face.

“What was that?!” I shriek at him. “Was that real?!” I am frightened and try to move from the chair, but then remember I am tied to it.

“Calm yourself, Tia. Don’t
